Easy Eddie's Take
This is absolutely right about the complexity of Medicare moves. Here's what most people are surprised to learn: when you relocate to a different state or even a different county, your Medicare Advantage plan might not follow you. That's because Medicare Advantage plans have specific service areas defined by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. If your new zip code falls outside your current plan's coverage area, you'll qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to switch plans.
A lot of people ask me, "What's the difference between moving with Original Medicare versus Medicare Advantage?" Original Medicare Parts A and B work nationwide, but your Medicare Part D prescription drug plan and any Medicare Supplement insurance might need updating based on your new location's available options and provider networks. The good news is that you have 60 days from your move date to make these changes without penalty.
One practical tip: before you pack those boxes, call the Medicare helpline at 1-800-MEDICARE or work with a local guide like ARA to compare plans in your new area. That way, you'll have your new coverage ready to go the day you arrive. A little preparation today can make your Medicare transition 123easy tomorrow.
