As Valentine's Day rolls around, it becomes that time of year when we do something different for that special main squeeze in our lives. Cards, candy, flowers, maybe even a dinner out? Champagne anyone? Whatever, whenever, and whoever was special to you in the way of love and affection made you….you!
Most of us remember when we were kids in elementary school as a day of passing our Valentine cards to classmates and a special one for the teacher. The little candy hearts with short messages of affection were popular, as well as making decorations for the classroom. Cutting out large red and pink hearts and then gluing white lace around the edges? Did you get your dozen?
As adults, it's more of the flowers and candy route with a special dinner. On Valentine's Day, millions of roses are given out, along with countless cards! America is not the only country that celebrates Valentine's Day. Canada, Mexico, and many European countries also celebrate Lover's Day.
Sometimes, it's not about flowers or candy; it's about creating a special moment or event in your lover's life. Several years ago, I made a custom Valentine's card for my wife that she still has today. It was a giant three-foot card filled with photographs of her enjoying various celebrations. It created a unique gift that she cherishes to this day. It was more about the effort and time I put into making the card than it was Valentine's Day. And, of course, there were still flowers and dinner!
Consider investing a little time to create a Valentine's moment for your loved ones. Life is short! Create memories! Continue making the effort to make you... you!

David's story about creating that custom card really shows what matters most about special occasions. Here's the good news for those of us in retirement: we often have more time to put thought and effort into meaningful gifts for the people we love. Instead of rushing to buy something last-minute, you might have the luxury of planning ahead and creating something truly personal.
A lot of people tell me they worry about spending too much on gifts during retirement, especially when they're living on a fixed income from Social Security, pensions, or IRA withdrawals. But the most meaningful gifts often cost more in time than money. Photo albums, handwritten letters, or even recording family stories can become treasures that last generations. Think of it this way: the gift of your time and attention is something you can always afford to give, and it's usually what people remember most.
Whether it's Valentine's Day, anniversaries, or grandchildren's birthdays, creating memories together is one of the best parts of having more time in retirement. That's what makes this season of life so special.
