I am not supposed to tell you this yet. So I am going to tell you almost everything, and then stop right at the good part, and you are going to have to come back tomorrow. Betty made me promise, and you do not break a promise to Betty.
Let me back up.
Who are Eddie and Betty, exactly?
If you have been with us a while, you met Eddie years before you ever heard him. Easy Eddie lived in the margins of our newsletter, the friendly voice in the little blue box who took whatever complicated thing the article was wrestling with and said, here is what this actually means for you. He was patient. He was clear. He was also, for years, completely silent.
Then this summer, everything changed. Eddie and Betty found their voice. Literally.
Every morning at 10:45, the two of them sit down and talk through that day's article on The American Retirement Advisor podcast. Betty opens the show, Eddie brings the mechanics, Betty asks the question you were already thinking, and somewhere in the middle they usually make each other laugh. If you have not heard them yet, you are one of the last holdouts, and honestly I am a little jealous of you, because you get to discover them fresh.
What did they do all summer?
They put in a shift, is what they did.
They walked through seven completely different doors into Medicare, one real story at a time. They spent a week explaining why your money has drug interactions too, which is still the best analogy anyone in this building has ever come up with, and I say that as the person who did not come up with it. And just last week they talked a whole lot of attorney phone numbers off a whole lot of refrigerator doors in The Fridge List.
Every one of those conversations lives in our series library, lined up like shows on a streaming shelf, if you want to catch up. Take a weekend. There are worse ways to spend one.
Here is my confession. I hear every episode before anyone else does. It is one of the quiet perks of my job. And some mornings, alone in my office with coffee going cold, I still catch myself grinning at the two of them like I had nothing to do with any of it.
So what is the secret?
Nice try.
Here is what I can tell you. Last week, someone asked Eddie and Betty to do something they have never done before. Not another series. Not another episode. Something neither of them has ever done, in all the time you have known them.
Betty said yes before the question was finished. Eddie went quiet for a second, the way he does when he is doing math in his head, and then he said, well, now we have to get it right.
