Why Am I Me? Life's Milestones Shape Who We Become

From first crushes to 40th anniversaries, life's milestones make us who we are. What experiences have shaped your unique journey?

As we mature during our lifetime, we experience many milestones. Who or what these experiences are to you and how you dealt with them makes you…you!

When we were young, in grammar school, we were in awe of the older kids and looked forward to the milestone when we would be their age. Then in middle or junior high school boys started to notice the girls with a little more interest than in grammar or elementary school; when the immature attitude was nothing short of "Girls have cooties!"

Life Starts Moving Faster

As we approached high school experiences started happening faster. Getting that driving learner's permit and starting to drive was a big event for most of us. Another was having a steady boy or girlfriend with the whole holding hands and maybe a kiss or two before moving on to something more serious. Some took the marriage path upon graduation from high school, while others continued their education at university. Milestones can take various paths.

Starting a family was a huge milestone. The thrill of welcoming that first child, or maybe the only child for some of us. There were countless first experiences at this point in our lives. Milestones started in rapid succession with jobs or a career path that might last a lifetime. The purchase of a first home might have been in the mix as well as a new automobile. Perhaps you had to relocate for a job and start over in a new location. Maybe you experienced a major vacation destination that you only dreamed about as a child but were able to take later in life.

Your Personal Volume of Milestones

In the circle of life there are always experiences that can mark a milestone for you. Milestones can be large or small, it's how they affect you that counts. Perhaps you are still dreaming of still unfulfilled events that will mark a future milestone. On a personal note, my wife and I just celebrated our 40th Anniversary - 40 years of memories, events, places, and times - a personal volume of milestones.

So, what are your milestones? Who was involved and where were you when they happened? What made them special? All of these events of your life are what makes you….you! Take a moment to reflect on the experiences that have shaped your unique journey.

Easy Eddie's Take

David's reflection on life milestones really hits home for those of us in or approaching retirement. Many people ask me, "How do I know if I'm ready for retirement?" and honestly, it often comes down to looking back at all those milestones that brought you here. That first job, buying your home, raising kids, maybe caring for aging parents - each experience taught you something about planning, adapting, and making decisions under pressure.

Here's what I find interesting: the same skills that helped you navigate life's big milestones are exactly what you need for retirement planning. When you bought your first house, you probably researched neighborhoods, compared mortgage rates, and planned for maintenance costs. Retirement planning with Social Security benefits, Medicare enrollment periods, and 401k rollovers works the same way - it's just a different kind of milestone preparation.

Whether you're 55 and just starting to think about retirement or 70 and already there, remember that you've successfully handled major life transitions before. A little preparation today can make your next milestone just as rewarding as all the others.
