During this Thanksgiving season I often see articles written about the different aspects of Thanksgiving. Some religious people implore us to give thanks for our bounty. Other articles are food recipes for the best pie or side dish. I also like to review the holiday through the ages and the part it has played in our American traditions. But how you celebrate the holiday, and when, where, and with who, makes you….you!
The Pilgrims invited the Wampanoag people to share their bounty with the first Thanksgiving in 1621. I'm sure the meal by all accounts was meager compared to what we serve today. Wild game, venison, squash and beans, and of course corn.
Early colonials made sure there was church service first, then came the feast. The meal was often a turkey or goose as it would serve many, along with vegetables followed by pudding or pie.
By the 1800's turkey became the essential main course and many traditional side dishes started making their appearance such as cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie as must haves. Depending on where in the country you live other items show up such as green bean casserole, dressing and gravy and others. Coastal Americans even added seafood!
By 1924 we now have added the grand event! The first Macy's Day Thanksgiving Parade which is still a staple of the holiday to this day. Large helium balloons, marching bands, clowns, and now even Broadway show tunes and performances from the current talent of shows.
And finally… FOOTBALL games! What would Thanksgiving be without football? Be sure to root for your favorite team! I've attended family Thanksgivings where everybody was wearing their jerseys!
So, no matter what your family traditions are, or who you celebrate with, these make you ….you! Cherish those unique moments that define your family's celebration.

David's point about traditions making us who we are really hits home for me, especially when I think about how many retirees are creating new Thanksgiving traditions in 2026. Maybe you're hosting for the first time because you have more space now, or perhaps you're traveling to see family with your newfound retirement freedom. A lot of people ask me, "How do I budget for holiday expenses on a fixed retirement income?" The good news is that most retirees find their Social Security benefits and retirement account distributions give them more flexibility than they expected for the things that matter most.
Here's something that might surprise you: many of my Arizona clients tell me their best Thanksgivings happened after they retired. They finally had time to cook that elaborate meal, watch every football game, or even start hosting the whole extended family. Whether you're drawing from your 401k, pension, or IRA to fund these gatherings, remember that these moments of connection are exactly why we plan and save. The traditions you create today become the memories your family will treasure tomorrow.
