Easy Eddie's Take

David really hits on something important here. Most people are surprised when they learn this, but having a comprehensive retirement plan isn't just about your 401k or IRA balance. It's about coordinating all the moving parts. Let's take a look at this together: your Social Security benefits, Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plans, long-term care insurance, and estate planning documents all need to work as a team.

For 2026, here's what that coordination looks like in real numbers. If you're turning 65 this year, you'll pay $185 per month for Medicare Part B, but your Medicare Supplement Plan G might run another $150-200 monthly here in Arizona. Meanwhile, if you're doing Required Minimum Distributions from your traditional IRA or 401k at age 73, those withdrawals could push you into higher Medicare premium brackets. That's why people ask me all the time, "How do I plan for healthcare costs without triggering higher Medicare premiums?" The answer is planning ahead with the right mix of Roth conversions, Health Savings Account distributions, and proper Medicare plan selection.

The good news is that when all these pieces work together, retirement planning becomes much more predictable. A little preparation today can make a big difference tomorrow.
