Sun, Family, and the Next Chapter: Retirement Planning Lessons from Maine

From Arizona heat to Maine lobster rolls, retirement is about having the freedom to savor life's moments without worrying about the bills.

As Arizona's summer heat starts turning sidewalks into frying pans, I'm reminded that a little preparation goes a long way. Whether you're packing sunscreen for a beach vacation or mapping out your retirement plans.

This year, Thea and I packed up Rex and headed east to visit our son and spend some time with our grandkid. We made a stop in Maine, where the sea air is cool and the lobster rolls are worth every bite. Celebrating Independence Day in New England felt especially patriotic. Flags waving from every porch, fireworks over the harbor, and neighbors gathering like one big family. Those moments remind me why we plan ahead: so we can savor a sunset without checking the calendar, laugh without worrying about the bills, and have the freedom to enjoy life exactly the way we dreamed it.

More Than Just a Nest Egg

I remind our clients that staying retired means more than just having a nest egg. It means revisiting your Medicare choices to look for cost savings opportunities, reviewing your retirement plan to capitalize on possibilities for the new year, and not forgetting to ensure your estate plans and legacy plans are in your retirement telescope. Retirement is for now, and your estate planning is for your family later.

As you savor every sun-drenched moment, remember, retirement is a journey, and a little preparation makes it a whole lot smoother. And I'll admit, even while I was sitting on that porch in Maine, I caught myself reviewing my own newly created trust document in my head, thinking about how to make sure my family will continue these cherished moments long after we're gone. Thea finally asked if I was strategizing about lobster dinner or legacy planning. Honestly, it was probably a little of both.

Rex, on the other hand, had no trouble unplugging. He spent most of the trip snoring on the porch, completely oblivious to whether we'd updated our estate plans. Sometimes I think he's got it all figured out; eat, nap, repeat. Maybe we could all learn something from an old dog after all.

Easy Eddie's Take

David's right about retirement being more than just saving money. Let's take a look at what "staying retired" really means in 2026. When he mentions reviewing Medicare choices, that's something you can do every year during Medicare Open Enrollment from October 15th to December 7th. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services changed some rules this year, so comparing Medicare Advantage plans versus Medicare Supplement insurance could save you hundreds of dollars.

Here's something most people ask me: "How often should I review my retirement plan?" The good news is that an annual check-up covers most situations. That means looking at your 401k and IRA distributions, especially if you're over 73 and dealing with Required Minimum Distributions from the IRS. And David's point about estate planning is spot-on. With the federal estate tax exemption at $13.99 million per person in 2026, most Arizona families are more concerned about making sure their trust documents and beneficiary designations are current.

The best part about retirement planning is that once you have the pieces in place, you really can focus on those lobster rolls and sunsets. A little preparation today makes those worry-free moments possible tomorrow.
