Making the Most of Summer Visitors in Retirement

Your visitors, whether family or friends, are what make you...you! Here's how to create memorable experiences together.

I love this time of year when we get visitors from out of town. Your visitors, whether family or friends, are what make you…you!

For me, everybody wants to come and see the local attractions — the scenic overlooks, the charming small towns, the historic sites, and maybe hike in nature to see all the various critters and vegetation, and if you're game, perhaps even take a horseback ride through the countryside.

For some of my more adventurous guests, there's camping, fishing, and exploring the back roads for a remote picnic destination. A leisurely float down the local river to watch wildlife as we drift by. Or a scenic train ride is a great way to see the diverse geography of your area. One guest wanted to see where classic movies were filmed on location. You can certainly have your own movie moment!

Sometimes, though, my visitors come to just hang out and catch up with what is going on in our lives. These types of visits are often the most enjoyable as there's no set schedule, no pressure, and no stress. Sit and play cards or start a Monopoly game marathon! Again, just relax and enjoy each other's company.

When friends get together, let's not forget about the food. Some of my guests have never tasted many of our regional dishes. I will explain that they should not be afraid to be adventurous and try new items. They might find a brand-new favorite!

So, whether you're sitting in the backyard with steaks on the grill while you're catching up with your guests with something cold to drink or on an outing, if you're all enjoying experiencing something together and making new memories, these are the visitors who make you…you!

Easy Eddie's Take

David's onto something important here. A lot of people ask me, "How do I budget for summer visitors on a fixed retirement income?" The good news is that entertaining doesn't have to break the bank. Many retirees find that simple pleasures — like David's backyard barbecues and card games — create the best memories without straining their Social Security or retirement account withdrawals.

If you're worried about increased grocery bills or activity costs during visitor season, consider setting aside a small amount each month in a separate savings account specifically for entertaining. Even $25-50 monthly can build up to cover those extra steaks, regional specialties, or admission fees. Most people are surprised when they learn this simple approach helps them enjoy hosting without the financial stress.

Remember, your time and company are the real gifts you're giving. That's what makes these moments priceless, and it doesn't cost a thing.
