Twelve years ago, I started writing this monthly article to spark reflection about life, the paths we take, and what makes us uniquely ourselves. What choices influenced them and shaped who they are? What makes you…you?
Five years ago, my journey took a new turn: I became eligible for Medicare. Having helped others navigate Medicare for years, I thought I knew it all. But experiencing it firsthand gave me a whole new perspective. Now I wasn't just explaining choices, I was making them. Reviewing plan options, understanding the nuances of coverage, and calculating costs wasn't just theoretical anymore; it was personal. That experience has deepened my commitment to helping others feel confident before choosing their own path.
I chuckle when clients ask, "What plan did you choose?" or more boldly, "Can you just pick one for me?" I always reply, "I'll educate you, but I won't choose for you. It's your life, your needs, your choice." I learned that lesson the hard way when my wife asked me to pick a plan for her. I told her, "Nope, you're picking." Thankfully, I didn't end up on the couch that night!
Some folks gravitate toward Medicare Advantage for the perks: zero premiums, free dental, gym memberships, even rides to the doctor's office. Those benefits are important to them. Others choose Original Medicare paired with a Medigap plan for the freedom to choose. This flexibility might be worth the extra premium to you. I chose based on what was important to me.
The real key is that there's no one-size-fits-all. There are trade-offs in every direction. That's why I enjoy my role. Because in the end, making an informed choice is what shapes not only your coverage but your confidence about the future.
You will make a decision that will make you….you!

Easy Eddie's Take
David's story about choosing Medicare really hits home because this is exactly what I see with folks every day. Most people are surprised when they learn that Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7 each year, and that's when you can make changes to your Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plans. A lot of people ask me, "Can I switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare with a Medigap supplement?" The answer is yes during Open Enrollment, but getting that Medigap policy might require medical underwriting depending on your state.
Here in Arizona, we're lucky to have some excellent Medicare Advantage options through providers like Banner Health Network and Honor Health, plus solid Medigap insurers like AARP and Mutual of Omaha. The key thing to remember is that Medicare Part B premiums for 2026 are $185 per month for most people, and that's the same whether you choose Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage. Think of it this way: Medicare Advantage often has lower upfront costs but may limit your provider network, while Original Medicare with a Medigap supplement typically costs more monthly but gives you freedom to see any doctor who accepts Medicare.
The best part about Medicare is that you're not stuck with your first choice forever. Take your time, ask questions, and remember that understanding your options today makes tomorrow a whole lot easier.
