September Soars In: Estate Planning and Medicare Prep

As summer ends and family grows, it's time to update estate plans and get ready for Medicare Annual Enrollment Period.

As summer comes to an end, Thea and I are excitedly looking forward to welcoming another grandchild this October. We recently returned from California, where we helped our daughter with last-minute preparations and celebrated with family at the baby shower. It was a wonderful weekend filled with love, gifts, and a few classic grandpa jokes.

Life events like that remind me how important it is to keep our estate planning documents current. A new grandbaby is more than a blessing, it's also a life change worth updating your legal documents for. Beneficiary designations, healthcare directives, and powers of attorney all need to adapt as your family grows.

If you haven't looked at your estate plans in a while, do it. No one wants surprises when it comes to legacy and wishes. A little proactive planning goes a long way in protecting the people and values we hold dear.

Flying into Medicare 2025

Speaking of preparation, another big event is fast approaching - the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). It starts October 15 and runs through December 7, and we're already prepping for takeoff with this year's theme: Flying into Medicare 2025. It will be our pleasure to welcome you to fly with American Retirement Airlines for this year's AEP plan review. I'll be your captain, and my crew and I are ready to ensure your flight is all clear skies ahead.

But here's the key: we can't chart your course unless you check-in to board your flight. That means don't wait to update your medication and doctor lists. These updates are mission-critical! Without them, we can't research whether your current plan is still the best fit for the coming year. Or if your plan will undergo changes that could impact your care.

So go to your email right now and look for the "check-in" letter sent by Judi@AmericanRetire.com. Don't delay in responding. We need time to work on your personalized Medicare recommendations for next year.

So whether you're welcoming a new family member or navigating your Medicare options, it all comes down to being prepared. Review your legal documents. Update your healthcare info. And know that we're here to help every step of the way.

Here's to a joyful fall, smooth skies ahead, and as always...let's make it 123Easy!

Easy Eddie's Take

David's excitement about his growing family is something I see all the time, and he's absolutely right about updating those estate planning documents. When you add a new grandchild, you'll want to review your will, trust documents if you have them, and those beneficiary designations on your retirement accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs. Most people are surprised when they learn that beneficiary forms actually override what's written in a will, so keeping them current is crucial.

And speaking of Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, here's what you need to know for 2024: from October 15 through December 7, you can switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans, change Medicare Advantage plans, or add or drop Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage. A lot of people ask me, "What happens if I don't review my Medicare plan each year?" Well, plans change their formularies, provider networks, and costs annually, so what worked great in 2024 might not be your best option for 2025.

The key is getting those medication lists and doctor information updated early, just like David mentioned. That way, whether you're looking at Medicare Supplement insurance or Medicare Advantage plans, you can make sure your prescriptions are covered and your doctors are in-network. A little preparation today can make a big difference tomorrow.
