While the heat and change of season are upon us, the "too hot" cry is in the air, and the cry changes in the winter when the same folks cry, "It's too cold!" And while extreme weather conditions exist in some parts of the country, other localities don't change much as the seasons roll by. But whether it's too hot or too cold, take advantage of the simple pleasures the season offers because these activities make you…. you!
Last winter, while talking to a friend who lives in the upper Northeast of the USA, he was happy that the youth hockey team he helps coach is already practicing on the local frozen lake, as they have done for years. He was also bragging about a large fish he caught while ice fishing—traditional simple pleasures to him.
In another exchange with a friend in southern Louisiana, they were excited about a family reunion and could not wait for the big family crawfish boil. They also had to mention that the blackberries were almost ripe for picking to make jam for the winter. Again, traditional simple pleasures of family and friends.
Many of my friends talk about their kids, or in my case, their grandkids, and the change of season for sports that the kids are active in. Fall football, winter basketball, spring baseball, soccer, tennis, golf are available at just about any time of year—the simple pleasure of attending games and cheering on your kids or grandkids.
So, whatever it is for you, review why it was necessary, and if it's something you last had the pleasure of doing a few years ago, well, get busy! Time is wasting. Be you for that simple pleasure just one more time. Oh, and if you're one of those who take the time and tradition of making your own homemade jam or jelly ….save me a jar…because that is something that makes me…..me!

Easy Eddie's Take
David's hit on something really important here—those seasonal traditions and simple pleasures aren't just nice to have in retirement, they're part of what keeps life meaningful. I talk with folks all the time who worry that retirement will feel empty without work, but the ones who thrive are usually the ones who've held onto these kinds of activities that connect them to family, community, and the changing seasons.
Here's something most people don't think about when planning for retirement: budgeting for the things that bring you joy. Whether it's travel to see grandkids' games, maintaining a boat for fishing, or even just having the flexibility to attend every family gathering, these simple pleasures often require some financial planning. The good news is that many of these activities—like David's friend coaching youth hockey or making homemade jam—don't cost much but give back so much more in terms of purpose and connection.
If you're approaching retirement, think about making a list of your own "simple pleasures" and what it might take to keep them going. Sometimes it's just a matter of staying healthy and active, and sometimes it involves making sure your retirement income can support the lifestyle that makes you...you.
