A headline has one job. Get you to stop scrolling. It is very good at that job and it is not paid to calm you down.
So when you see "Humana Cuts Medicare Advantage Plans for 2027," your stomach drops before your brain gets a vote. Let us give your brain the vote back. Here is what the reporting actually says, and what it means if you or someone you love is on one of these plans.
What is true. Humana is exiting some of its Medicare Advantage markets for 2027. Coverage across the industry puts the number near 600,000 members nationwide.
What the headline skips. That 600,000 is about 8 percent of Humana's roughly 7.2 million Medicare Advantage members. The other 92 percent are not in this news at all. The plans being retired are the lowest rated ones, at three and a half stars or below. Humana has said it expects to move around 40 percent of affected members into its other plans on its own. And no one is being left without a runway. Anyone who does need to choose has until December 7, the close of the Annual Enrollment Period, to do it.
That is a very different story than "600,000 people just lost their coverage." Both come from the same facts. One of them is honest about the size of it.
Here is the part nobody can shortcut. Until the official 2027 plan information is released on October 1, no advisor, no article, and no insurance company representative can tell you with certainty what your specific plan looks like next year. Anyone who claims otherwise before October 1 is guessing. The most trustworthy answer you can get right now is, "we will know for sure in a few weeks, and here is how to be ready."
So if a letter shows up in your mailbox this fall, here is what a calm person does with it. Do not throw it away, and do not panic-enroll in the first thing a television commercial offers you. Read it. Note the date. Understand that a non-renewal is not a penalty and it is not urgent to the day. Then get a real person to read your options with you before December 7.
That last step is the one most people skip, and it is the one that costs them. The difference between a rushed choice and a good one is almost never more money. It is one unhurried hour with someone who does this for a living and has no reason to rush you.
That hour is what we are putting on at the library. On Friday, October 2, American Retirement Advisors is hosting two no-cost Medicare workshops. Glendale, Foothills Library, 10:30 AM. Scottsdale, Mustang Library, 2:30 PM. We will not pitch you a plan or hand you an application. We will teach you how to read the year in front of you, so the next scary headline finds you already informed.
Register at 123easymedicare.com/oct-workshop or call (877) 220-1089.
