Your Medicare Annual Wellness Visit: Free Preventive Care Benefits

Don't ask for a physical or you'll pay co-pays. Ask for your Medicare 'Wellness Visit' instead - it's completely free and covers 30+ health screenings.

OK, OK, I went and did it ... I did what? I completed my annual "Wellness Visit." You know… my preventive doctor visit that's free from Medicare. Oh, yeah…and that additional thing we're supposed to get every 4-5 years that's really fun: colonoscopy (NOT!). What you do for your health is part of what makes you…you!

We all want to be as healthy as possible, and Medicare created this benefit to help you stay aware of all your health needs. There are about 30 items your primary care physician can check during your 'wellness visit', including blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and various screenings for common health issues. And the best part? It's all at no cost to you. Oh and by the way, don't ask for an annual physical or you may wind up with some co-pays - instead, use the correct phrase; ask for an annual 'Wellness Visit.'

When Doctors Were a Long Trip Away

Doctor's offices are very conveyor belt-oriented these days. The doctor wants to see you in three months for a follow-up, or every six months if you want your prescriptions renewed. If you have a few specialists, you can spend your life just going to doctors and lab appointments. Your annual wellness visit might save you from some of those additional visits.

Growing up in a rural area in the 1950s and '60s, you didn't go to the doctor unless you needed stitches, broke something, or were next to dead. My mom knew a home remedy for almost everything that ails you- the same remedy that most country folks knew since going to the doctor meant a trip into town that could be 50-75 miles away. My favorite remedy was homemade cough syrup: honey, lemon, and whiskey in equal parts. A couple of tablespoons always did the trick. (It also helped you sleep, much like a hot toddy for sleepless nights today). I still use that recipe when I feel a cough or cold coming on.

Even with life's distractions, it's crucial to prioritize your wellness. It's like keeping an eye on the woodshed-you want to catch any 'booger' early, before it becomes a bigger issue. Early detection is key.

Take advantage of this Medicare benefit because keeping you healthy is what makes you...you!

Easy Eddie's Take

David's absolutely right about asking for the "Wellness Visit" instead of a "physical." Most people are surprised when they learn this one word makes the difference between free and paying a co-pay. Here's what's covered in 2026: Your Medicare Part B Annual Wellness Visit includes a health risk assessment, cognitive screening, vision and hearing checks, depression screening, and review of your medications and supplements. Medicare also covers specific preventive screenings like mammograms, Pap tests, prostate exams, and yes, that colonoscopy David mentioned.

One question that comes up all the time is "Can I get my wellness visit and other screenings on the same day?" The answer is usually yes, and Medicare Part B covers these preventive services at 100 percent when you use in-network providers. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you get these same benefits, plus many plans offer extra wellness perks like gym memberships or telehealth visits.

Think of it this way: catching health issues early through these free screenings can save you thousands in treatment costs later. A little preparation today can make a big difference tomorrow.
